Since the world has changed drastically and we’re all spending more time at home, one thing I love is getting out every day for fresh air and take in the beauty of nature – be it a light jog in my neighbourhood, walking my dog or taking a solo stroll finding new pockets in my ‘hood to explore.

Right in the middle of our neighbourhood is Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary – a beautiful nature oasis with two distinct ecosystems; a lush marshland around Swan Lake and the rocky, oak-forested highlands of Christmas Hill. Both habitats are home to an incredible variety of native plants and wild animals.

It’s an easy 5K loop around the lake with minimal elevation. The loop trail has beautiful views of the lake, wooden bridges, fields, plant and animal life for all nature lovers. There’s a floating boardwalk where avid photographers line up to get the best wildlife shots of local ducks, birds and deer that frequent the nature sanctuary. There’s a wonderful Nature House at the entrance, which is a fun information centre to take the kids to learn about the native plant, animals and insects in the area. This is a great little escape and it’s minutes away from downtown Victoria!

One thing to note because this is a nature sanctuary, dogs are not permitted. Otherwise, there’s a small parking lot at Swan Lake and toilet facilities at the Nature House.
